I’m not saying that SM 17 is a bad product, it is good but lacks a lot of functionality that used to exist with legacy SM 12 and 14.

(windows XP and windows 7 era) Then with SM 15, the arrival of windows 10 and the “all new” iolo iolo was not able to release a quality product, maybe because top engineer/developers or key staff were fired? I don’t know for sure, but the fact is that SM 15 was the worst iteration of System Mechanic, Iolo worked hard to fix this and released SM 16, then SM 17 and now SM 17.5 but still SM is not what it used to be. So my theory is that after this major restructuring inside iolo, iolo started to get lost and perhaps all the intellectual properties, patents and System Mechanic roadmap was already there up to SM 14 and that is why SM 14 was still the best Windows Optimizer out there. Iolo was acquired by Phoenix technologies in Octoand I suppose that this also came with several internal changes, like re-structuring and firing iolo staff (usually that happens when Company A Purchases Company B). So, after this brief summary of my whereabouts since my last review, here comes my honest opinion overall: Iolo should focus JUST on system mechanic and not develop/purchase other solutions that are not their “core” business, why? Because SM 15 was a complete crap, SM 16 started to improve and fixed some annoyances from SM 15 but SM 17.5 is far behind the glory days of Iolo with SM 12 and SM 14.
I’ve made some suggestion during my phoenix 360 beta testing, basically for iolo to improve System Shield (their AV solution) but not sure if they will ever be implemented (several monhts passed since I sent my suggestions, some of them were very basic and easy to implement). About the Antivirus? Well, Iolo’s AV is still way behind top paid (and even free) AV solutions.

I’m a premium user of Lastpass so no need to have another password manager, I don’t like Privacy Guardian and I have to be honest, there are on the market better solutions than Iolo’s Privacy Guardian. I have no plans at all to use phoenix 360, privacy guardian or any other iolo product, not because they are bad, but I just need System Mechanic, not the antivirus, the privacy guardian or the password manager (byepass as iolo name it).
I’ve beta tested the new Iolo product Phoenix 360 as well as the Privacy Guardian. And this is really appreciated because you gave me the opportunity to test and to assist in further improving System Mechanic as well as other Iolo products. I’ve exchanged several emails directly with some Iolo staff and also I’ve became a beta tester. As of today I have SM 17.5 and overall it works as expected, but still it is lacking a lot of features, optimizations and tune-ups compared to legacy versions 12 and 14.Įven when compared with other products like Glary Utilities or AVG tune up.
